Friday Favorites - Week 1

Photobucket

Hello everyone! Welcome to our first edition of Friday Favorites. I plan to host this event each Friday and I hope that it will help me to get to know my readers and create a more interactive site for everyone.

To join the party, just link up a favorite post from this week, and be sure to include a link to my blog somewhere in the post so that others can join the party.  For this event, I'll also be featuring bloggers.  Each week I'll pick about 5 ideas from participants and followers OR I'll choose a single blogger to feature for the week.  So if you'd like to be featured for Friday Favorites, just link your posts up here, OR become a follower, OR be a regular commenter. (Or do all three!)

I'm fortunate to have a lot of people that come by for a visit and several that follow and comment on a regular basis, so it was difficult to decide what to do for this first Friday Favorites post, but finally I decided to feature a single blogger.  So without further ado, I'd like to introduce you all to Chaya!

chayacomfycookblog

Chaya is the creator of Chaya's Comfy Cook Blog AND Sweet & Savory.  Chaya's also a contributer at Our Krazy Kitchen, where they have recipes, tips, and fun foodie round-ups. Chaya is a loyal follower and commenter, and she's a regular contributor to my monthly Sweet Thursday round-ups.  She's also a great friend and an excellent blogger!

Chaya's blogs chronicle her kitchen adventures, featuring tons of delicious and unique culinary creations. Chaya's Comfy Cook Blog is dedicated to gluten-free recipes, while at Sweet & Savory pretty much anything goes.  To be honest, I never knew much about gluten-free food till I visited Chaya's Comfy Cook blog, and her blog has definitely kept me open minded about it.  As you can imagine I've been most inspired by her gluten free desserts!  Chaya is a big fan of Nigella Lawson, Paula Deen, and Dorie Greenspan, and they're recipes often serve as models for her gluten-free masterpieces.  Here's just a couple of  yummy examples:
Chaya made these delicious looking Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich Cookies adapted from a Nigella Lawson Recipe.

And these adorably cute little bundts were adapted from Paula Deen's Basic 1-2-3-4 Cake.

And Chaya has so many other fabulous recipes from soups to sides to veggies, chicken, fish, and main dishes....pretty much anything you can think of: All Kosher and All Gluten Free!

So what about Chaya's other blog? Why, I thought you'd never ask! Sweet & Savory has even more of Chaya's delicious recipes.  The tagline says it all: "Over the years, my taste in food has changed, as have my recipes. This blog will chronicle the changes I continue to make, as I face challenges in healthier eating and in new methods of cooking."

Well said! And from the looks of things, it's turning out to be a fabulous journey.  I'm tempted to brag on Chaya's recent chocolate chip cookie and brownie posts, but there's so much more that I could mention, other than desserts.  One recipe I'd love to try is Chaya's Moo Goo Gai Pan.  Looks delicious, huh?

And here's one of her many pasta dishes: Quick & Easy Pasta. Yum!

So if you are looking for some new recipes to try, I recommend heading over to Chaya's blogs!

Creating a Unique Image for Your Business (or Blog) - Guest Post by Christy Strauch

I'm very excited to have Simply Sweet Home be a part of Christy Strauch's virtual book tour this month, and I'm happy to have her guest posting here today!  Christy Strauch is the author of Passion, Plan, Profit: 12 Simple Steps to Convert Your Passion into a Solid Business. In addition she is president of Clarity To Business and has worked with over 300 small business owners, from artists to real estate agents, helping them do what they are passionate about – and make a profit. Her book is available at Amazon.com - Passion, Plan, Profit: 12 Simple Steps to Turn Your Passion into a Solid Business

For this post, I asked Christy to tell us how we can make our blogs and businesses stand out; that is, how can we create a unique image and differentiate ourselves from other bloggers (or shop owners) in our niche so that we can gain a loyal readership and customer base.

When you start making things, whether they are crafts, lotions, a new recipe for a meal, a dress, a blog, a new website, or anything else, underneath the impetus and desire to create whatever it is, lurks a purpose.

The purpose can be anything. You might want to beautify your home, create something new for your family, teach yourself a new skill, make a new kind of lotion that’s easier on your newborn’s skin, hone your writing skills, or even, God Forbid, even earn extra money.

The first step in creating a unique image for yourself and the things you make, are to discover what this underlying purpose is.

I’m going to use this website as an example. Jerri tells us in her “About” page that she’s “…always loved expressing myself through music and writing….It [the website] has been a wonderful creative outlet…It is a place for women to come for ideas, family fun, and inspiration.”

So the purpose of Simply Sweet Home is to give Jerri a wonderful creative outlet and serve as a gathering place for women, where they can find new ideas for making family life fun and inspiring.

Now that you know the purpose of this website, everything flows from there. Jerri can use this purpose to decide what products or services she herself might offer on her Etsy site. As an example, she creates jewelry; that work gives her a creative outlet which is in line with her purpose.

Her purpose will help her choose what products or services from other people she would endorse on the website. She features other Etsy artists, and women who make things that make family life fun and inspiring.

She uses her purpose to help her create blog topics. It helps her decide how she communicates to her readers, what she says, and how she says it.

Most importantly, her purpose helps her differentiate herself from other people and businesses doing the same work.

This is where your work comes in.

If you want to differentiate yourself from other websites or businesses doing similar work, here’s what to do.

Sit down in front of a blank piece of paper. Find your favorite pen, and answer these questions:

1. What do I enjoy doing so much that I’d do it whether I got paid for it or not?

2. What motivates me to do this work?

3. Why it is critical for me to do this work?

4. Why is it critical for the world for me to do this work?

The answers to these questions will help you begin to unearth your purpose. And once you know what it is, knowing it and expressing it in all your work, will be the single most successful way to differentiate yourself from everyone else.

Starting Your Business: Just a Few Ideas, Part 2

Here's Part 2 of my Business Ideas Article.  I hope it will help to inspire you.  Don't forget to come back tomorrow for a guest post from Christy Strauch.

7. Make gift baskets. This is a similar business idea to the flower and wreath business, and it could be a good seasonal business to supplement your flower or craft business. The best times to sell gift baskets are around Valentine's Day and Easter; however, if you plan to make a lot of sales, then you need to start taking orders in advance so that you will have time to make the gift baskets and so you can get the word out and make plenty of sales to make the effort worth your while. If you get a lot of customers you might also consider taking orders for Mother's Day and Christmas baskets.

8. Make money in sales. You can make money by selling used items from around your home or selling items from a wholesale website. Use websites like ebay and upillar to reach customers. Or you can sell items at a yard sale, a consignment shop, your own website website, or flea market booth.

9. Accounting/Consulting/Data entry. If you have previous office or business experience, try contracting yourself out to small businesses. Small business owners often need part time help to do accounting, data entry, filing, marketing, and other administrative tasks. This is another idea that does not require a lot of start up money, and you can earn a decent salary even if you only have a couple of clients. This kind of work also does not require a lot of time away from home generally.  You can often find jobs online.  There are websites out there that specialize in placing virtual assistants in data entry and customer service jobs.  Just be sure to do your homework to avoid scams.

10. Telemarketing. If you look in the paper or on the internet you will find plenty of jobs for telemarketing sales and making calls for collection agencies. This kind of work is not for everyone, but if you have a good phone voice and you enjoy talking to people, this is a good stay at home job.

11. Baking/Catering - If you enjoy cooking and baking consider running your own baking and catering business. This venture can be as small or as big as you like. You can bake an occasional cake or pie for a friend or family member who is having a party. If you are a skilled cake decorator you can earn money by making wedding cakes, or you can go all out and cater for entire events, providing appetizers, main courses, desserts, and anything else you wish to offer. If you have a friend who enjoys cooking or baking this would be a good business to go into with a partner. And you can earn a good wage just by catering to a couple of events each month.  There are also several good bake shops on etsy, if you wish to go that route.

12. Tutoring - Tutors can potentially earn a very good hourly wage. If you have expertise in a particular subject, and especially if you have a degree and enjoy sharing your knowledge with others, you should try being a tutor. Often you will find that people you already know have a child that needs to be tutored, or they know of someone who is looking for a tutor. You can also put your name on tutoring lists at schools and local agencies that provide tutoring services or you can sign up at tutor.com. This is a great job that can take up as little as an hour or two of your time each week, and you can work with kids of all ages or adults in college.

13. Professional organizer/Decorator - If you are good at organizing items in your home, you can get certified and become a professional organizer or decorator. In this type of home business people pay you to come into their home as a consultant and get it organized and uncluttered or decorated. As a professional organizer you could also host organizing parties where you introduce and take orders for new organizing products.

14. Fortune/Network Marketing- There are lots of networking marketing companies out there.  Some are good. Some are not so good.  My husband and I are involved in a company called Fortune.  Unlike other marketing companies there's no selling involved or quotas.  Fortune pays you to purchase your own cell phones, internet, satellite tv and other products from yourselves (rather than purchasing at Best Buy or Wal-mart).  And they have an extremely generous pay plan.  (In fact if you have cell phone or internet at your house, you're already doing Fortune....you're just not getting paid for it.)  So if you're interested in that, I'd be happy to give you more information.  Other well known marketing companies include Avon and Mary Kay. My stepmom actually got started in Mary Kay a couple of months ago, and she seems to enjoy it.  And there are a lot of lesser known companies that sell scrapbooking supplies, jewelry, and more.

15. Workshops/Ecourses - If you have expertise in a particular field or you have a marketable skill, then you can make money from teaching others what you know. You can make money by creating and selling an ebook or ecourse. You can hold online workshops and webcasts. Or you can have workshops and conferences offline at a your local civic center, library, your home, or another venue.

As you can see, there is a wide range of opportunities out there for people who would like to start a home business. All it takes is one good idea, and some research and initial planning, and you can begin building your own home business and becoming financially independent.

I originally wrote this article in 2008.  Though I tweaked it a little, I'm sure there are a lot of new opportunities in 2010 that are not included in this article.  If you have anything to add to the list, feel free to comment.

Turning Your Hobby or Passion Into a Business

Today as promised we have a guest article from writer Christy Strauch.  Christy is the author of  Passion, Plan, Profit: 12 Simple Steps to Turn Your Passion into a Solid Business which is now available at amazon.

Want to start a business based on your hobby or passion? Here’s what you should do.

The first thing you have to know when you are evaluating whether or not to turn your passion into a business is your level of commitment.

Having a hobby is a lot like being single—you can work on your hobby (i.e. go out on a date) when you feel like it, or stay home in your pajamas and watch TV if you don’t. Hobbies don’t demand anything of you (just like that casual date you had last night). You can work on your hobby every free minute you have, or put it down for a year, or change your mind and forget about it completely, with few repercussions.

A business, on the other hand, can be very demanding. Deciding to cross the line from hobby to business is like committing to getting married. If you decide you want to make your hobby into a business, you have to commit yourself heart and soul. If you decide to turn your passion into a business, you’ll be making the decision to go from happy-go-lucky hobby kid, to grown-up business adult.

You know what making a commitment looks like. There will be days when you don’t feel like working on your business. But since it’s now a business instead of a hobby, you’ll have to do the work anyway, or figure out how to delegate it to someone else. Your commitment will force you to take actions that scare you; take risks that might frighten you, or do things you don’t enjoy.

But just like with a marriage, if you pick the right work, the work you love, turning it into a business can be deeply fulfilling, not to mention fun and profitable.

It boils down to one question. Are you ready, willing, and able to commit?

Do you have what it takes to turn your passion into profit?

The skill of successfully owning and running a business doesn’t require a specific genetic trait, or possessing the set of secret rules from a small business society that only allows five selected people into their membership every three years. What it does require is:

• A willingness to learn, at a deep level, who your perfect clients are and how to market to them.
• The perseverance to keep going when things are tough.
• The training to understand what your business numbers are telling you.
• The ability to flow with change.

If this all sounds too scary, then you should consider keeping your hobby a hobby.

But if you think these challenges sound interesting, stimulating and fun, you’re the right candidate to turn your Passion into Profit. Ask yourself these questions:

1. Do you love your hobby enough that you’d like to do it regularly, as work?

2. Would you like to become a professional at your hobby; to step up your level of skill at it so you would be considered one of the best in your field?

3. Would you be willing to spend time marketing your work?

4. Are you willing to work on it even on days you’re not in the mood?

5. Can you weather setbacks (a client firing you, someone not paying who promised to pay, a downturn in the economy, plus a host of other things that happen to every business owner).

6. Are you willing to learn new things; such as new ways to market, updated ways to do your work, etc.?

In addition she is president of Clarity To Business and has worked with over 300 small business owners, from artists to real estate agents, helping them do what they are passionate about – and make a profit. Starting Your Business: Just a Few Ideas, Part 1

February is Start a Business month.  This week I'm featuring a few posts to help our bloggy-friend business owners and would-be business owners out there.  Today I'm starting with an article that I wrote a few years back, detailing some business ideas for women because I think decided what kind of business you want to start is one of the most difficult things.  It's sort of a long article, so I'll just be sharing half of it today, and here in a couple of days I'll be publishing the rest of it. Enjoy!

------------------------------------------

In today's world of online business and internet marketing there are more people working from home than ever before in recent history and still more who would like to try it, and a large percentage of people who hope to start a home business are women, namely stay at home and would-be stay at home moms. One of the hardest parts to starting a home business is actually choosing what business to go into. A lot of people think to themselves, "I would like to start a home business, but what kind of business could I possibly start?" There are actually a lot more options than many people think. All you need is an idea, (and usually a product or service), and you can start your own business. Once you have your initial idea and you begin planning and marketing it, the possibilities are virtually unlimited. Here are a few business ideas for stay at home moms who would like to be work from home moms.

1. Writing - There is a whole host of ways to make money from writing. You can produce content for sites like Helium and social networking sites that pay for content. There is also money to be made from writing for your own blog, website, or newsletter. You can use these methods to market your writing, network, sell products, and make money from affiliate marketing. You can also make money from writing articles and ebooks. Additionally there are several sites available that post freelance writing jobs on the internet. Some of these job postings are for writing a single article while others can lead to a full time job producing website or blog content or articles for offline publications. It generally takes patience, persistence, and hard work to make money from writing, but for those women who enjoy expressing themselves and being creative, there are many options and methods to make money from writing.

2. Web graphics and design - For those women who are internet savvy and skilled with html/java script and creating graphics there is a lot of money to be made in web design. People search the internet every day for graphics and banners for their site, as well as layouts/templates/skins for their webpage or blog, and they are willing to pay for original, customized designs.

3. Cleaning homes & businesses - Women can easily make money as a housekeeper. This would require you to leave the house, but it is an easy business to start, and it does not require a lot of start up money. There is also a high potential to make a lot of money working only a couple of days a week, and all you really need is a few clients to earn a decent wage. When I was young my mom did housekeeping work for a close relative. She was able to make some extra money and take care of me at the same time, which was a big plus. I also have a friend who earns $500 a week, working part time. In fact a couple of her clients are dentist and doctor's offices which are fairly easy to clean and not at all time consuming. You can take out an ad in your paper or market your services online or in the phonebook, and you can choose which households and businesses you work for and how much you will work depending on how much money you want to make.

4. Babysitting/Daycare - Stay at home moms can make money by babysitting for other kids, and if you really like kids, you can get apply for a license to run your own home daycare. But you may want to find a partner before going into the daycare business. You also might consider sitting with an elderly or disabled person a couple of days a week. It is a fairly easy job for someone who wants to make a little bit of extra money, and the work generally involves things like cooking a meal, going the the store, some light cleaning, chatting with the person, and perhaps a little cleaning.

5. Craft and jewelry sales. You can make money by making and selling your own jewelry and crafts. You can sell items to family, friends, neighbors, and people from church. In turn these people will refer other customers to you. You can host jewelry/craft parties at your home to show off your wares and make sales. In fact, you can expand your business by getting a friend or family member to help you host a party at their home. They would invite their own friends and family members whom you may not be aquainted with, and you will have the opportunity to meet new customers. You can also make money by selling your items at a flea market or taking them to a consignment shop or boutique. The shop or boutique will get a percentage of your profits, but you will have an opportunity to reach a market that you could not reach on your own. Finally you can market your items on the internet. Make your own website or use sites like Etsy, Ebay, or Upillar.

6. Create corsages, baby wreaths, bouquets, and flower arrangements. The florist business is extremely profitable. If you've ever ordered flowers for a prom or homecoming, or if you've ever planned a wedding or purchased a wreath to go on the door when a baby is born, then you know what I mean. These items cost very little to make, and yet the cost can be outrageous. You can start this business by marketing to friends and family or coworkers of your spouse. If you do good work, then they will come and buy from you the next time they need flowers, especially if you charge a slightly cheaper rate for your items than your local leading competitors. Also, if the initial people who buy from you, like your work they will recommend your services to their friends.  This is also a great business to market on etsy.  And because you are in business for yourself, you have the opportunity to personalize the items far beyond what the local florist will do.

Come back for part 2 on Wednesday!

Favorite Mashed Potatoes

We love mashed potatoes at our house! Actually we love potatoes in general.  And I can't do instant....I just can't!  I just never have really liked them.  There are a lot of things I can take shortcuts on or make "from the box."  But I have to do potatoes from scratch!

Today I'm sharing my "recipe."  I'm using the quotes, because I don't actually have an exact recipe.  It's one of those foods that I just sort of throw together.  But I do have some approximations for you at least!

Also, while we're on the subject of mashed potatoes, I should tell you that Tater Mitts are awesome! My husband bought me some not long after they came out at the stores, and I love them! (So much that my hubby and I even have a song that we sing about the tater mitts....yeah, we're just a kind of a little bit nuts!)  Anyway I use these every time I make mashed potatoes. (The secret is boiling your potatoes for about 20 minutes---skin & all...not chopped---and then the skin comes right off.  The instuctions that come with the mitts say 8 minutes I think....but I always do it for 20-25 minutes.  And then after you do your peeling and chopping, you just put them back in your pot to cook till they are done.) It's so easy and quick!

Recipe for Favorite Mashed Potatoes
Ingredients:
4-6 potatoes (boiled, peeled chopped)
about 3 heaping spoonfuls of mayo
little milk (I'd say about 1/2 a cup)
Pepper
Morton's Nature's Season  (or salt/pepper/garlic salt)

Directions: Peel, chop, and boil your potatoes. (Or boil, peel, chop, and boil, if using tator mitts.) Drain the water off your potatoes. Add your milk and mayo. Stir.  Add seasonings. (I generally add, then stir, then add, then stir, until I have it right.)   Stir until  you reach desired consistency.  (We like ours a little lumpy.)

Upcoming Events at Simply Sweet Home

Photobucket

Hey everyone! I have a few announcements to make! First of all, I am currently planning a new weekly event for this blog. I'd really love to add more interactivity to the site. Plus I love attending blog events each week, and I had so much fun hosting the Holly Bloggy! I've been brainstorming and kicking around some ideas for the past several months, and I've finally come up with a feature idea that I think will be fun for one and all!

The event will be called Friday Favorites. To participate, just link up your favorite post of the week. This is pretty much wide-open. You can link up a recipe, a craft, baby pictures, a project, a tip, a deal you found, just about anything (family friendly of course). Or if you have a "Favorites" event at your blog you can link up at that post. (I know some of you have posts where you feature your favorite links, write about your favorite things from the week, etc.) It's entirely up to you.

Also, for the event I will be featuring posts from you guys! To be eligible to get featured, you just have to link up at the event or be a follower of my blog. Each week I'll visit everyone who links up and some of my followers, and then I'll pick items to feature for the next week. This will help me get to know you guys better, and it should create new traffic for all of us.

I will launching this event next week. The post will be published late next Thursday night, and you will have until the following Wednesday to link up you posts. I've also created a button for the event. You don't have to use it to link up. I only require that you add a link to my blog on your post so that others will know about the event.  I welcome your comments and questions, and I hope to see you here next for the first party.

Business Event - For Bloggers & Shop Owners - Next Week

Secondly, did you guys know that February is National Start a Business Month? I know we have a lot of readers who own their own businesses or blog to make money, so next week I'll be devoting some time to post on some business topics that should be helpful to you guys. Among these posts there will be 2 guest articles from writer Christy Strauch. Christy is the author of Passion, Plan, Profit: 12 Simple Steps to Turn Your Passion into a Solid Business.  All month long Christy is having a virtual book tour, and I'm proud to say that Simply Sweet Home was chosen as one of the tour hosts! Christy sent me a copy of her new book a couple of weeks ago, and it's excellent! (I'll be reviewing it some time in the next month or so.) And I'm really pleased to be having Christy here next week to provide you with some insight and advice!

Does Your Kitchen Look Like a Post-It Commercial? Declutter Your Fridge and Bulletin Boards Today!

Do you guys post stuff on your fridge? Or do you have bulletin board in your kitchen for posting important items? I've always tried to keep our refrigerator neat and clutter-free, just posting something on it here and there. On the side of our fridge, I posted a few "important coupons" and some diabetes-related stuff for my husband who was just diagnosed back in November. Then all of a sudden...Boom! The refrigerator starts looking like a cluttered desk! A couple of weeks ago I was doing a general decluttering in the house, and I decided that this just wasn't working:
I removed all the papers, coupons, and some of the magnets, leaving my little Menu Planner Board, a couple of magnetic notepads, and just a couple of cute magnets behind on the fridge. Much better!
So where did all the papers go?? They were moved to a secret location known only to a select few. I'm pleased to present the inside of the cabinet doors.
I remember when I was little my mom had a list of important phone numbers posted inside of our cabinets and a calendar. It's a great place to post things where you can see them, yet still keep them hidden from the rest of the world. (And now every time hubby opens the cabinet to get out his meds, his blood sugar testing chart is right there in his face.)

And here's my favorite part! I have a coupon binder for most of my coupons, but I like to keep a few really good ones out so that I will not forget to use them. I took all the coupons off the refrigerator and placed them in this "handy dandy coupon pocket."

To make the pocket, I simply took a business envelope and folded back the flap. Then I just placed tape on the edges of the envelope (bottom & sides) and hung it up inside the cabinet. Because the envelope is extra wide you can place a bunch of coupons side by side and overlap them one behind the the other so that you can see several at one time. Here there's only 6-7 coupons, but I've since added a bunch of others to the pack. This is also a great way to keep up with appointment cards.

So there you have it! A solution for decluttering that pesky fridge or bulletin board while taking advantage of all that empty (& hidden) space within your cabinets!

Homemade Alfredo Sauce

One of my favorite things to eat is Alfredo Pasta!  When we lived in South Alabama there was a locally owned place called Pintoli's that had the best!  And now we frequent a place called Roman Rooster, and their pasta could easily rival our old place. (And not to mention, their pizza is the best I've ever had! But I digress...)

But when I want to cook pasta at home, I use the alfredo sauce recipe that I'm sharing with you today.  I found this recipe nearly a year ago over at Amy's Finer Things. This goes great with all kinds of pasta and meat.  We usually do Chicken Fettucini Alfredo, but over the weekend I served the sauce with egg noodles and tiny shrimp.  It was excellent!

Recipe for Homemade Alfredo Sauce:
Ingredients:
 1/2 c. butter (1 stick)
1 (8 oz.) package cream cheese, softened
 2 tsp. garlic powder
 2 cups Half and Half
6 oz. grated Parmesan cheese (shredded, not powder)
 pepper to taste
basil and/or parmesan for serving (optional)

Directions:  Melt the butter in a saucepan. Add cream cheese and garlic powder. Stir together until smooth.  Add half and half, cheese, and pepper. Stir until combined and smooth. If the sauce is thicker than you like, thin with a little milk. Serve over your favorite pasta, and season as desired.
